Introduction

Hello everybody, my name is Brandon Pham. I am currently a Senior in the Price College of Business. My major is Management Information Systems or (MIS) for short. Nobody really knows that MIS is, but I like to call it an easier form for CS that is blended with a lot of core business classes such as Accounting, Finance, Legal Studies, and etc.

I was born and raised in Moore, Oklahoma. Been here all 21 years of my life so far. Probably going to end up staying in Oklahoma after I graduate because my current internship will most likely transfer to full-time employment after graduation.

My favorite class last semester would have to be Cyber-security and Infrastructure. It taught me a lot of soft skills that were transferable to my internship and it's just interesting stuff anyways. Cyber-security is an up and coming field and I felt like I probably learned the most from this class than any other business class so far. I would highly recommend it if you are an MIS major.

My hobbies recently have been cooking, reading, and playing video games. During the Summer, I didn't really have time to dwell on these hobbies because I was working full-time. Going back to working part-time combined with having online classes has given me a lot of time to catch up on my hobbies. Having online classes is such a blessing because I don't have to spend time driving all the way to campus. I will say that trying to find parking is one of the biggest time wasters I have ever been in.

I guess my biggest accomplishment last semester was having good grades. I didn't have to utilize the pass or fail grading system because I managed to get the grades that I wanted. I'd like to attribute that to the transition to online classes.

  1. Hi Brandon,
Your favorite class of Cybersecurity and Infrastructure sounds really cool! I am a pre-medicine student, so that is completelyyyy different than the classes I take, but I really respect people who excel in that field! This summer I became a certified IT Security Specialist through a 30 hour Linked In course. I'm not sure how legit it was, and I wouldn't be confident enough to apply for a job or anything with it, but I really enjoyed learning about that topic! Keep up the good work!

  2. I totally (TOTALLY) agree about parking, Brandon! I've worked online for so long now that I kind of forget how much time gets lost that way. So, yet another plus of online / remote work, although I would prefer to do that WITHOUT the pandemic. No pandemic needed to work from home IMO!
And I hope this class can be a fun way to learn some new things about the computer world. Do you have an account at OUCreate already by being in MIS? Create.ou.edu link ... OUCreate gives you a domain of your own where you can manage your webspace with a control panel, doing all kinds of cool stuff... like Twine, for example, which is a kind of combination of storytelling and programming! I use OUCreate to host all my Twine and javascripts and randomizers and stuff like that. It's part of a global project called "Domains" which you can read about here if you are curious: Reclaim's Domain of One's Own link.
Anyway, I hope you will enjoy the class, and it is always exciting to meet another fan of the online world! :-)

  3. Hi Brandon,
I really enjoy MIS when I took it for Price College requirements. I am a Finance major and I love everything about it. I definitely agree with the parking situation here at OU and I like how most classes are online because no one has to worry about the parking anymore and it's so great. I hope you have a great semester.

  4. Hi Brandon,
I definitely agree that online classes are great. Since my hometown is in Iowa, I didn't really get to spend a lot of time with my family last year since Oklahoma is 10 hours away. I love being home now, because it means I get to spend a lot more time with my family! I also love the flexibility of online classes, since there is no need to have to drive or walk anywhere; I can just walk two steps to my desk, click a few times, and voila, I'm in class! Congrats on getting good grades last semester, in the midst of this crazy pandemic! I have never heard of MIS major before, but that sounds really awesome!

  5. Hi Brandon!
I think that line classes are pretty great too, but I think you have to be super motivated to stay on top of things. I am from Norman, so hey! I have also been super into cooking recently, and of course I like video games and reading! My favorite game to "veg" out on right now is Minecraft Dungeons on XBOX, it is SO much fun. Good work for making good grades last semester, I hope this semester remains the same for you! I look forward to reading your work for the rest of the semester.

  6. Hi Brandon,

I am also an MIS major and I remember you from the Cyber Security class. Your summary of what MIS entails is spot on. I also enjoy playing video games! What type of game do you play? I'm also grateful for these online classes as they seem to be much more manageable. I also completely agree about the parking. I always hated trying to find a spot, but luckily I only have one class in person during the evening so parking is very open. Good luck with the rest of your MIS career, maybe we'll see each other in the work force.

  7. Hey Brandon. I am also a price student so I understand what the MIS field is like. It was never really for me because I do not think I am good enough at computer work to do all of that but it is a really interesting field. I agree with you that last semester transferring online really helped my grades last semester. I love to play video games too and I am curious about which video games you like to play. Good luck with the rest of your endeavors.

  8. Hi Brandon. That is cool that you are a MIS major. One of my roommates is doing a MIS minor, and from what I know it sounds pretty interesting even if it can be confusing! I also agree that having online classes has given me more free time to pursue my hobbies. For example I have played way more tennis this semester than I have other semesters. I hope you have a great senior year!

  9. Hi Brandon! That is so awesome that you are an MIS major. I took MIS last year (I am also a Price student) and thought it was interesting, but definitely not something I could do as a career. It is definitely a very useful major, though, and you learn so many things that can be applicable in lots of different fields. I am from Oklahoma as well, but hopefully, I will be able to move to a different state after college. As you said, though, it's all dependent on where you get a job. Hope you have a good semester!

  10. Hey, Brandon! Throughout my time here at OU, I've gotten to know quite a few MIS majors from different organizations. They have all been swell people, and it sounds like an interesting field. I'd done some (VERY) light reading into cybersecurity over the summer and it was certainly interesting. Also, I am also from Moore! Born and raised here. That said, I have no clue where I'm going to be in a year. (Depends on where I go for graduate school) but I can't blame you for staying (moving sucks!).

    Cheers,

    Chris

  11. Hi, Brandon!
Congratulations on the Internship! I am a senior too, but I’m an International Studies major. Cyber security sounds like a really cool class, and it's really cool also that you got to apply what you learned to real life too! I have to admit I really have been liking having mostly online classes as well- it makes my days a lot easier.

  12. Hi, Brandon!

Nice Introduction! Your major sounds really interesting and I am glad you have a nice set plan for what you're going to do after college. Oklahoma is pretty cool, a bit boring, but at least everyone is friendly for the most part. Thank you breaking MIS down for us, I sure didn't know what exactly it was. I'm also glad you got the grades you wanted last semester. I also did not use any pass or fail options because of the transition online. It saved a lot of people because It allows for more time to study. Also, not having to be a savage everyday for a parking spot is a plus! Goodluck!

  13. Yo Brandon! I completely understand the feeling of not being able to indulge in your hobbies like you used to. This year has been pretty hectic for me thus far, and my workload has only gotten more strenuous. I used to play a lot of video games as well, but that is not so much the case anymore. I think its awesome that you are focusing on your grades though, because that is what I have been doing as well. I intend to keep my good GPA going forward as well!

  14. Hi Brandon!

In your intro, you wrote that you enjoy reading. What are some of your favorite genres to read? Do you have a favorite novel? As an English major, I'm always looking for good suggestions!
I'm also glad that you were able to get the grades that you wanted to last semester. It's a big achievement, especially with everything that was going on.

    Have an excellent day!

  15. Hi Brandon!
I am always so jealous when people live in the place that they are originally from. You must have tons of family here! That's really nice! It's also super cool that you'll have a job once you graduate from college, that seems to be a struggle for a lot of students! As for MIS, the only time I have heard of it was when I had to take a class called fundamentals of MIS. I don't think it relates, but I'm glad that you like it!

  16. Hey Brandon, it is so interesting to hear about your hobbies and interests because my boyfriend is always talking about how important cybersecurity is and how I need to begin learning more about ways to keep my data private. It's super interesting to me that there is a whole class centered around cybersecurity, but I guess the possibilities are endless. Congratulations on having a successful semester last Spring, and I wish you the best of luck as we enter finals in the next couple of weeks!

  17. Hello Brandon,
I have read a number of your microfictions in the past, and I like the way you incorporate basketball into your stories. it's clear that you have a passion for the sport and are a dedicated fan. I've never taken cyber-security, but it does sound interesting, especially in the way this world is growing and turning more digitial. Hope to read more of your stories soon :)
